Maintaining Carbon Filters for Optimal Performance

Carbon filters are an essential part of the process of removing hazardous and smelly compounds from polluted air streams. They are commonly used to eliminate odors from grow tents, pet odors, kitchens, basements, laundry rooms, or any other place where humid air is stagnant. However, it is important to know how often to clean and maintain these filters in order to ensure they are working properly. Under normal circumstances, carbon filters should be washed every 3 to 4 months, or more frequently if used intensively. People who cook greasy or fried dishes over high heat should check the condition of their filters every one to two months.

If you don't cook as often, change your filters at least twice a year. To clean a carbon filter, you should do the following:

  • Remove the filter from the hood
  • Soak it in warm water and dish soap for 10 minutes
  • Rinse it with warm water
Doing these steps on a regular basis (every 1 to 2 weeks) will help you determine when you should replace your carbon filter. If you have a ductless hood with carbon filters, change it approximately every one to three months or after 120 hours of cooking. It is also important to make sure that the carbon filter cartridge is the correct size for your system. A smaller cartridge or a cartridge incorrectly placed in the carbon air filter will allow contaminants to pass through. If your carbon air filter cartridge is a different size than what you need, the system will become unusable. We recommend scheduling a maintenance appointment for your carbon filters every 12 months so you don't have to worry about forgetting them.

Your activated carbon filter should be serviced and maintained by a trained professional, which could help extend its life. The prefilter is the white cloth cover located on the outside of the filter, which prevents dust or large particles from entering the carbon filter.
